UNESCO Confirmed Saman Dance as the Culture Heritage of Humanity

Saman Dance, which originates from the Aceh Province will be acknowledge and confirmed by UNESCO as world intangible heritage on 19 November 2011.

This was announced by Mr. Gede Pitana, Head of Culture and Tourist Resource of the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Indonesia. Furthermore he said that the process to obtain the acknowledgement has taken several years until the Saman dance was finally confirmed as the Representative List of Intangible Culture Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO.

up till now the world has 890 heritage sites consisting of 689 culture heritage, 76 natural resource heritage and 25 mixed between cultural and natural resources heritage. of the said heritage, Indonesia possesses 11 heritage which in it  are 4 (four) natural heritage, 3 (three) culture heritage and 4 (four) intangible culture work. The natural resource heritage consists of:

- Taman Nasional Ujung Kulon - Banten (Ujung Kulon National Park - Banten)

- Taman Nasional Komodo - NTT (Komodo National Park in Lesser East Nusa)

- Taman Nasional Lorentz - Papua (Lorentz National Park in Papua)

- Hutan-hutan Tropical di Sumatra (Tropical Forests in Sumatra)

- Candi Borobudur (Borobudur Temple) and Candi Prambanan (Prambanan Temple) in Central Java was confirmed as world   heritage by UNESCO in 1991.

Other Intangible culture heritage possessed by Indonesian are:

- Wayang (Indonesian traditional puppet) was confirmed as Masterpiece of the oral and intangible heritage humanity in 2003.

-Keris (Indonesian small dagger) was confirmed as Masterpiece of the oral and intangible heritage of humanity in 2005.

- Batik was confirmed as Represent list of the intangible culture heritage of humanity in 2009.

- Angklung was confirmed as Represent List of the intangible culture heritage of humanity in November 18th, 2010.

With Saman dance becoming the latest list of world heritage, it is proven that Indonesian has many heritage sites to be acknowledge as world heritage.
