Jakarta to Soft Open ′Most Modern′ Bus Terminal on Saturday

Jakarta Governor Fauzi Bowo is expected to inaugurate the soft launch of the Pulogebang inter-city and inter-province bus terminal in East Jakarta, said Udar Pristono, the head of the city transportation office on Friday.

Udar said that the soft launching ceremony will be held on Saturday at 1:00 p.m., and said the occasion will also see the use of the terminal by a TransJakarta bus plying Corridor XI, a route which until now has ended near the East Jakarta municipal office.

Udar added that it would be sometime individual TransJakarta buses would make use of the terminal.

“We will widen the road for the articulated TransJakarta bus by about one meter at the bend of Pulogebang Raya, so that the long buses can safely turn there,” Udar added, saying that the widening would be done as soon as possible.

He also said that besides TransJakarta, the bus terminal would also be used by public minivans (better known as angkots) serving three routes: Pulogadung-Gudang Palawad, Cakung station-Rawamangun and Pulogadung-Ujungkrawang.

The soft launch comes as 80 percent of construction has been completed at the terminal, with full completion expected in October.

Although the terminal had was originally conceived in 1991 and at the time was touted as the most modern in the country, construction only began in 2010 at a cost of Rp 448 billion (almost $48 million).

The new terminal occupies a land of 9.08 hectares and is a multilevel building.

The first floor is comprised of 33,903 square meters, and is meant for passenger circulations and will include a supermarket, a department store and retail space as well as bus ticket counters, a mosque, lockers, toilets and service areas.

The 10,444 square meters Mezzanine functions as a commercial area, while the second floor of some 4,309 square meters will house the bus departure areas, a rest area for bus crews, and the arrival area and terminals for the TransJakarta and city buses.

The 2,683 square meter third floor will be designated as a food court while the fourth floor, with a surface of 2,980 square meters will host terminal management offices of various bus companies.
