Minister of Foreign Affairs Retno Marsudi, as one of the hosts of the Ministerial meeting to discuss the United Nations peace operation, said that Indonesia is highly committed to continuing its support of various peacekeeping missions carried out by the UN.

"Indonesia is fully committed to the UNs peacekeeping efforts," said Minister Marsudi, as quoted in a press release from the Foreign Ministry received here, Thursday.

The statement was made by the Minister during the UNs peace operation meeting, held during the first week of the UNs 71st General Assembly in New York, United States.

The Minister said that as one of the countries that have contributed the largest number of peacekeeping troops, with a total of 2,867 personnel participating in the UNs 10 peacekeeping missions, Indonesia will continue their commitment in contributing professional troops.

She also delivered the Indonesian governments commitment to heighten their contribution by sending more personnel, in accordance with the Vision 4,000 Peacekeepers, which continues through 2019.

During their meeting, the Foreign Minister again stated that the UNs peace operation is important, not only to maintain the worlds security and peace, but also to create a conducive atmosphere for global development.

"Development can be smoothly carried out only if there is continuous peace, security and stability in the countries," she said.

She mentioned three main concerns that need to be considered, in a bid to support the UNs peace mission task and role.

Firstly, peace troops, police forces and civil staff involved in the peace mission need to be provided adequate resources and capacity.

"Security for peace personnel needs to be prioritized," she remarked.

For that reason, she continued, the UN Security Council, along with those countries contributing troops, need to deliver a clear and realistic peacekeeping mandate, in accordance with the situation in the field.

"We have to supply them with the necessary competency and resources, along with a clear mandate, so that our peacekeeping troops can be protected while they are carrying out the mission in the field," she reiterated.

Secondly, Marsudi spoke of the importance of the role of women in the execution of the UNs peace mission.

"Women need to be involved in every phase and aspect in peacekeeping efforts, including in the peaceful settlement of disputes, conflict prevention and resolution," she affirmed.

Lastly, the Minister said it is imperative to change the character of the peace mission itself, from reactive to preventive.

"It is important to take the correct measures in order to integrate conflict prevention efforts, peace-making and peace building, to ensure that prolonged peace is achieved," she said.(*)
